He also received first prizes (Medaille D’Or) in Saxophone Performance and Chamber Music from the Conservatoire de Bordeaux Jacque Thibaud, Bordeaux, France.

He has had a prolific career as a music educator having taught at conservatories, colleges and universities in Canada and France. Derek has also taught at independent and public schools in Manitoba and Ontario for the past twenty years.

Derek endeavours to build strong foundational skills with his students regardless of whether they are beginning or advanced musicians. He believes in a student-focused model in which the student is free to explore the styles of music that they wish to play. By focusing on what excites each student, Derek helps them develop their skills while having fun at the same time.
